I think there's a case to be made for Utada having the same impact on R&B that Perfume did on electropop, where, if you look, things were already going on in those genres even on major labels, but there wasn't a face yet to mainstream them and make those sounds approachable to the general public. That makes them both easy touchstones to reference when charting later developments in those scenes, but definitely not the one and only origin point in either case. Really appreciate the level of research that went into this, and I'm excited to dig into some of these picks later!
